DAY 2 - SPREAD THE WORD
Imagine that you are in a desert. There are people everywhere and they are all dying of thirst. Some of them are people you know and love, people that you have spent time with and that you know well. Others are just acquaintances that you have seen around, and the rest are strangers to you. Now imagine that while searching for water, you find a magical river that never ends. It is amazing! The water is clear and clean. Your mouth is watering just thinking about drinking it.
You drink directly from it and immediately you feel refreshed and like new again. This is special water, you realize. Water that keeps you from ever getting thirsty again. Now what do you do? Do you run back to where your family and close friends are and tell them? They are really thirsty and they could die at any point. They have started getting weighed down and exhausted. They can hardly move at all. All that you need to do, is get them there and let them drink.
So you run back and tell them, but because they are so weak from dehydration, they can’t do it on their own. You must help them get there. You lift them up and help them walk until they can get there because you know that when they finally drink, they will suffer no more. Everything will be alright.
You can’t live without these people, they are important to you. You must take several trips back and forth to get everyone there, but they are finally there, now it is up to them. You led them there, but you cannot forcibly make them drink the water. They could just spit it out. What if they don’t want the water or think it will run out eventually and we will die later? What if they think that they don’t need this water to live? Maybe you should tell them about how the water has quenched your thirst and made you feel like you can never be thirsty again. Maybe they will believe if they see how much better you feel. Maybe that will be proof enough for them. Some of them decide to drink and immediately feel the relief that the water provides. You can visibly see how the water is flowing through them and making them feel like new.
The others that didn’t drink the water wonder if this is a trick. Is it real? Does this water really make people better? They aren’t ready to drink yet, but now they are starting to think harder about the possibilities. Maybe if more people came and drank of the water then everyone would see the truth. That this is not a trick, this water is really changing people into ones that will never thirst again.
All those other people are still looking for water and haven’t found any. Maybe I should go back and tell them about this river. I don’t want anybody to die because I didn’t tell them about this. Can I be brave enough to tell them about how this water is changing people? Or will they think I am crazy and delirious and not believe me? Will they make fun of me or get mad because they think that they can find water in another direction? What do I do?
The water that we know is so life changing is called the Living Water that is provided to us whenever we accept Jesus as our Savior. Once they realize how Jesus has changed you, some will drink without hesitation. They see the proof in you and need no more urging. Others might be more skeptical, but if they see you and hear your truth, they might not accept Him now, but you have planted some seeds for the future. Those strangers…they need to know Him too. Do you go back for them? Do you risk persecution and ridicule to tell them? They don’t even know that they are thirsty. So when they look at you like you are crazy, remember that they are lost, without any hope, and have compassion for them, They don’t know what they are missing. It is like they have blinders on and can’t see the proof in front of them yet. They need more seeds planted and then the next Child of God that comes along, may get a little farther with them than you did. But if you don’t ever try, then more than likely they will die a certain death filled with despair and a parched throat. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want anyone to die of thirst when there is a river right in front of them.
"...but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spirit of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:14 (NIV)
