DAY 5 - OMNIPRESENT
Omnipresent - to be present in all places at all times. Miriam Webster
Another trait of God is that He can be anywhere at any time. But when we really take the time to consider the enormity of that statement, our minds simply cannot comprehend it. The fact that God can be here with me, knowing my every thought while simultaneously being there with all His other children in the world at the same time. It is a staggering realization.
As humans, we know that if we are in the classroom at school, then we cannot be at home in the living room as well. It’s either or, not both. But for God, this rule doesn’t exist. He is not bound by the restraints that we are. He can be anywhere and everywhere all at the same time, every second of every day. He doesn’t need time to sleep. He is God. He can comfort me in my sadness at the very same moment that He is giving courage to someone else who needs it. His power and might are beyond anything that we can imagine.
Let’s think about the fact that there are no off-limits places or abilities for God. Whether you are in a group of 500 people or alone in the hidden spaces of your mind, there is no desert big enough and no river wide enough that He cannot reach you. You cannot be “bad” enough for Him to give up on you, but you also cannot be “good” enough to earn His love. His love and presence just are. They are always present no matter what type of day you are having, no matter how angry or hurt that you may be, even if it’s toward God Himself. There is no hidden space that you could withdraw to that He cannot find you and bring you back to Him. If He can be everywhere simultaneously then that means that we will never be alone. So, we never have to fear being without Him, because He is always there.
Let’s look at a few of the verses that show the omnipresence of God.
Jeremiah 23:24 (NIV) “Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?" declares the Lord. "Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the Lord."
Psalm 139:7 (NIV) “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?”
Job 34:21 (NIV) “His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step”
Proverbs 15:3 (NIV) "The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good."
Let’s think about the Holy Trinity for a second. There are three parts of God; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Once we accept Jesus into our hearts then the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. Therefore, not only is God always watching, and Jesus always at our defense, but the Holy Spirit is literally living inside of us and thus, He is with us no matter where we go. We are never alone.
What does this information mean for me?
The fact that God is everywhere means that …
- On my worst day, when I cannot get the words out because my heart is so discouraged and hurt, He knows my heart. He was there and saw what happened. He knows the ins and outs of the situation even better than I do. He knows why it occurred and how it will be resolved. So, when we cry out to Him in prayer, but can’t find the words to explain, let’s remember that He already knows, and He has a plan to work it out for my good.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)
When I stumble and doubt Him or even turn away from His love, He is still there. He still knows what is in my heart. And He will stay with me, reminding me who He is, how much He loves me, and that I belong to Him. He will draw me back to Himself where I belong, no matter how long it takes. I am one of His children.
"What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?” Matthew 18:12
It is amazing to think that we who are merely a “vapor in the wind” matter to the Lord of the Earth. That He cares enough about each of us that He wants us to know that we are never without His presence and love, no matter what.
“WHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE WATERS, I WILL BE WITH YOU…” ISAIAH 43:2
Today as you go about your normal day-to-day responsibilities, take a moment throughout your day to consider the Lord being present with you. He is there as you get up and get your day started, He is there during all your arguments. He is there when you are alone. He is there when you are tempted to try that first drug, and He is there when you resist. He is with you through it all, and He is watching you with very closely with pride, and a love that only your Heavenly Father can have.
Most Gracious Heavenly Father, we are humbled that you love us this much. We mess up so often, yet you never leave us alone to wander this world without You. In this life we will inevitably face darkness, please help us to look to You alone for the light to guide our path. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
SO DO NOT FEAR, FOR I AM WITH YOU… ISAIAH 41:10
